Think Questions Teacher Answer Key

1. How would you describe the mood of this painting? How does the artist's choice of colors contribute to this mood? Why do you think he chose these colors? (He may have had very few paint colors to choose from; the walls may have been gray; this dress may have been Abigail Gowen's best dress; this dress may have been a prop owned by the artist, etc.) How would you change the colors to make this picture more lively?

2. Why do you think Abigail's family wanted this PORTRAIT? Why do we have portraits made today? Why were 18th-century portraitists less valued than silversmiths or artisans who made furniture? (Portraits served no practical function.)

3. How are many PORTRAITS made today? (With a camera.) What are the advantages to photo-portraits? (They take a lot less time.) Do you think the colonists would have had more portraits made if they could have had photo-portraits? Why do some people today still prefer to have their portraits painted?
