Art in the Colonies

During the 17th century, American colonists had little time for art. They produced only objects needed for daily life. As prosperity grew during the 18th century, however, they began to commission portraits to decorate their homes, to mark special events, to pass on to their children, and to send back to their relatives in Europe.
