Curriculum Materials: Art in America
Early Portrait Painters Many early American portrait painters wandered from town
to town, painting portraits in exchange for lodging. Because
their skills were not in as much demand as those of
furniture makers or silversmiths, most of them also worked
at other trades, such as painting signs, maps, and even
houses. Joseph Badger, who spent most of his life in and
around Boston, worked as a
GLAZIER and sign
painter. Like most other early painters, he was self taught
and learned to make portraits by studying
ENGRAVINGS of English
portraits.
