Curriculum Materials: Art in America
The Caddo A succession of native societies flourished all across North America long before European exploration began. We know little about the lives of the first Americans, since they left no written records. We do know that some of them were nomadic, while others lived in permanent villages. Among the latter were native peoples who lived in cities in the Mississippi River valley and constructed huge earthen mounds. Archaeologists call these early Americans Mound Builders. Among the Mound Builders were many different groups
collectively called Caddo. From the 12th to the 15th
century, Caddo people occupied lands covering parts of what
are now Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas. The earliest Caddo
were primarily villagers and farmers.
