Technique A woman made this jar using traditional techniques. She
formed the base and then built the walls by pinching
together successive coils of clay. The potter then scraped
the outside to remove excess clay and achieve a uniform
thickness and smoothness. Using the chewed end of a yucca
leaf as a brush, she covered the dried jar with a thin
mixture of white clay. Finally, she painted the black and
red patterns with mineral and vegetable pigments. To harden
the pot, she fired it over a flame fueled by manure.
