Pottery

Native peoples in the Southwest have made various types of containers for food preparation and storage. For 8,000 years, weavers have made baskets from vegetal materials. Since the development of agriculture some 2,000 year ago, potters have produced clay containers. Many Native American peoples in the Southwest consider the art of pottery so sacred that potters offer prayers honoring Mother Earth before gathering the clay.
