Curriculum Materials: Art in America
Tourist Trade For centuries, Acoma potters produced ceramics for use in
the pueblo. When the railroad to Albuquerque was completed
in 1880, however, they began to make pottery for trade with
tourists. The train brought many visitors to the region who
were eager to see American Indians and to acquire souvenirs
of their visit. Potters from the nearby pueblos, including
Acoma, brought their wares to trade at the railroad station.
While the influx of tourists to the Southwest altered
traditional ways of life for many, it also kept some pottery
traditions alive by creating a thriving market. Acoma is one
of the few pueblos in which pottery has flourished
uninterrupted.
