Neoclassical Style

Neoclassicism was a popular style based on the revival of the art and ideas of ancient Greece and Rome. The revival began when excavations of ancient Roman cities in the mid-18th century inspired widespread interest in the CLASSICAL world. MOTIFS from Greek and Roman art became common in European art and eventually in European-American art as well. Through classical images, the newly formed American republic associated itself with the ideals of the Roman republican government.

Revere adapted this popular fluted design from English neoclassical silver. The flutes resemble the columns of ancient Greek and Roman architecture. Classical influence is also visible in the cream pot, which resembles an inverted Roman helmet with a visor. In addition, the sugar container looks like a Greek urn, a type of vase with a base.
