Period Rooms

During the 1920s and 1930s, a renewed national interest in America's colonial past led art museums to begin acquiring rooms from historic buildings. These rooms are called period rooms because they represent a specific period of history. Museums use rooms like these to display furnishings (not necessarily from the original house) in a homelike setting and to illustrate the social customs of the time.
