Style Koehler drew upon several popular styles in this
painting. His concern for
NATURALISM and the
generally dark palette are products of his training in
Munich, Germany. Like other painters trained in Munich, he
was very influenced by the revolutionary French
IMPRESSIONIST
painters. He shared the Impressionists' goals of capturing
the true nature of outdoor light and depicting scenes of
modern life. While Koehler's dark palette is not
Impressionist, their influence is visible in his loosely
applied brushstrokes, in the flickering dashes of white on
the surface, and in the exclusion of details from the
painting that a viewer of the scene would be unable to
see.
