Robert Koehler

Robert Koehler emigrated to the United States from Germany when he was four years old. He worked and studied art in Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and New York City. From the 1870s to the early 1890s, he returned to Germany periodically to study painting at the Munich School. From 1893 to 1914, he was director of the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts, then housed in the Minneapolis Public Library on Hennepin Avenue and Tenth Street. One of Koehler's favorite subjects while in Minneapolis was the rapidly growing city itself.
