Curriculum Materials: Art in America
The Tradition of Feasting In 1621 the Pilgrims celebrated their first harvest in
the "New World" by enjoying a feast with the Native
Americans who had helped them survive that first year. This
was the beginning of an American tradition known today as
the national holiday of Thanksgiving. The Woodlands Indians
on the eastern seaboard, however, had celebrated a form of
thanksgiving feast for centuries. For them, the celebration
with the Pilgrims was part of an ancient tradition of
offering thanks to the Creator for the abundance of the
earth.
