Legends of the Catskills

The Catskill region gave rise to an abundance of folklore. The American Indians who lived there before Europeans arrived considered the mountains to be the wall of Manitou (the Creator) and the mountain peaks, the home of spirits that controlled the weather. European Americans identified certain parts of the landscape as the legendary Sleepy Hollow, described by Washington Irving in his tales of Rip Van Winkle. Irving did visit the Mountain House, but not until years after he wrote the stories.
