Legends of the Catskills The Catskill region gave rise to an abundance of
folklore. The American Indians who lived there before
Europeans arrived considered the mountains to be the wall of
Manitou (the Creator) and the mountain peaks, the home of
spirits that controlled the weather. European Americans
identified certain parts of the landscape as the legendary
Sleepy Hollow, described by Washington Irving in his tales
of Rip Van Winkle. Irving did visit the Mountain House, but
not until years after he wrote the stories.
