The Grand Hotel

Also popular was the famous Catskill Mountain House, built in 1823 on a steep mass of rocks 2,200 feet above sea level. People from around the world visited this white NEOCLASSICAL hotel, acclaimed for the fabulous views it provided of the sunrise. To reach the hotel from New York, guests traveled by steamboat up the Hudson River and then rode a stagecoach for another four hours. Once at the hotel, they enjoyed the beauty of the wilderness with all the conveniences of home. Visitors knew the Catskill Mountain House as the Grand Hotel, but local residents called it Yankee Palace. The mountain house was demolished in 1963.
