Adult Classes and Seminars
Classes and one day seminars focus on both the permanent collection and special exhibitions.

Young People's Programs
Classes combine studio activities in a variety of media and study of the Institute's collection and special exhibitions. Programs are offered for children four to sixteen years old.

In the Palace of the Sun King

This class will explore the baroque splendor of the Bourbon palace and trace the transformation of the chateau and garden complex at Versailles from the simple hunting lodge to the capital of France, and finally to the playground of Marie Antoinette.

Transforming the Body: Photography and the Nude

Part personal expression, part artistic invention, part social comment, and endlessly suspended between the erotic and the aesthetic, the nude has always been photography’s least understood genre. Expanding on the exhibition "Body Work: Photographs of Nudes," this class will examine the ways photographers have transformed the bodies in front of their cameras into powerful visual statements. In addition, participants will trace the relationship between the photographic nude and changing social conventions. Instructor: Vince Leo

POPular Prints Workshop (Ages 7–10)

Delve into the exciting world of Pop art and printmaking. Learn through exploring the exhibition "Pop on Paper" how Pop artists of the 1950s and 1960s incorporated images from mass media into their artworks, and investigate how their prints were made. Then return to the studio to make your own prints, using current images from pop culture. Saturdays in Classroom 111. Sections are limited to 14. Instructor: Todd Peterson

Discover vibrant and colorful miniatures from the Far East. Explore the Islamic, Indian, and Himalayan galleries to learn about the history, materials and techniques used in making miniatures. Visit the special exhibition "The Art of 20th-Century Zen: Paintings and Calligraphy by Japanese Masters" and discover the rich tradition of Japanese calligraphy. In the studio, learn about tools and materials used in calligraphy, and explore some basic brushstrokes. Classes meet in Classroom 112/113. Sections limited to 20. Instructor: Yali Peng

Teatime Workshop (Ages 4-10 with an adult)

Discover the varied collections of tea sets from around the world and the rituals and traditions of "taking tea." Explore the museum galleries to learn how different cultures use different materials to make and decorate in many shapes and forms, teapots and teacups. Design your own tea set in the studio. Classes meet in Classroom 111. Sections limited to 14 individuals. Instructor: Joan Geyer.
