Curriculum Materials: Art in America
The Subject Sarah Allen, a resident of Gloucester, Massachusetts, was
34 years old when John Singleton
Copley painted her portrait. The artist also painted a
portrait of her husband, Nathaniel Allen, a successful
businessperson and active politician. The Allens were among
the less than 1% of colonial America's population who had
portraits painted. Since only wealthy colonists could
afford portraits, these paintings were status symbols.
