Curriculum Materials: Art in America
Social Realism The Depression of the 1930s, threats from abroad, and
World War II all pushed many American artists to produce art
of social commentary. Though
ABSTRACT art had
dominated American art during the 1920s, government-funded
relief programs for artists later dictated the production of
a socially conscious art. Artists who addressed social
concerns in realistic styles that the general public could
understand are known as social realists. Social realists
often glorified factory workers and farm laborers and their
contributions to industrial progress.
