Curriculum Materials: Art in America
The Great Depression After World War I, the United States experienced
temporary prosperity, but the stock market crash of 1929
brought on a period of devastating hardship for many
Americans. During the Great Depression, in the face of such
physical realities as mass unemployment and hunger, the
American dream of a good life for anyone willing to work for
it quickly disappeared. Producing for a depressed and
unpredictable world market, farmers saw their incomes fall
drastically. Further, severe drought in Midwest farming
regions caused thousands of farmers to migrate from the area
in search of work. Many people found themselves penniless
and homeless.
