Curriculum Materials: Art in America
Art During the Depression ABSTRACT and
NONREPRESENTATIONAL
art, which had gained favor in the United States during the
1910s and 1920s, held little meaning for poverty-stricken
Americans during the Depression. Therefore, many artists
turned to
NATURALISTIC or
seminaturalistic styles that the general public could easily
understand and appreciate. They also began to paint subjects
that reaffirmed the American values of family, home, and
hard work.
