Traditional Clothing Before the Lakota traded with
Europeans, Lakota women made most of
their clothing from animal hides - bison, deer, and elk.
They revered these animals, which they hunted for food. To
make a garment of an animal's hide was not only a
resourceful way of using the whole animal, but also a way of
honoring and thanking it for giving up its life. The
Lakota embroidered their garments
with dyed porcupine quills. They considered porcupine quill
embroidery a sacred art. After contact with Europeans, glass
beads gradually replaced the quills in garment
decoration.
