Curriculum Materials: Art in America
Painting on Hide Plains Indians have made
paintings on animal hide since ancient times. Women
traditionally painted geometric designs, while men painted
pictorial scenes. These scenes, usually painted on bison
hides, often described the men's personal achievements or
historic events relating to their people. During the period
when the U.S. government forced Native Americans onto
reservations, many artists transformed traditional art forms
such as hide paintings into saleable items for much-needed
income.
