MUSIC ACTIVITIES

Howling Dog
(image)

The artist Paul Klee played the violin. He felt that painting and music involve similar creative processes and affect people in similar ways. Many people see the shape at the dog's left as its howl, a sort of dog song. Study the painting for clues to what a howling song might be like, and then write your own words. For example,

The red wind is blowing round
The round moon is glowing sound
As I sing my howling song,
it goes round, round, round
ooooo, round, round, and round.

Write an advertising jingle to go along with this painting. Consider: What kind of music would go best with this scene? What kind of music would help sell the product? Would it be fast and lively? slow? melodic?

Thematic Activity

Listen to Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev. How does the music tell the story? How can you tell when the wolf appears? What instruments are used? What kind of music would go with each animal in this unit? Why?
