Primary Standard: Writing and Speaking Write a story based on Billboard, with both characters and plot relating to what can be seen in the painting. (See Activities, Language Arts.) Create a commercial that is based on Billboard and is intended to persuade people to visit New York City. (See Activities, Language Arts.) Write a poem using words that capture the essence of colors and images selected from a popular magazine aimed at a specific audience (e.g., Gourmet, Sports Illustrated). (See Activities, Language Arts.) Discuss why Billboard can be considered a visual catalogue of New York City, read poems that use catalogues as a literary device, and write a poem based on a catalogue of words that express personal feelings about the local community. (See Activities, Language Arts.) Research a particular place and time, such as New York City in the 1950s, and based on the findings, write a catalogue poem. Compare and contrast this catalogue poem with a personal catalogue poem (see preceding activity). (See Activities, Language Arts.) |
