Primary Standard: Literal Comprehension

Gain ideas and information from listening to a presentation about the cultural context of Billboard, the style of the painting, Hartigan's life, and her viewpoints on Billboard.

Use arts terminology descriptive of the visual elements of Billboard (e.g., color, shape, line, texture, space).

Describe the visual choices that Hartigan made in creating Billboard by responding to questions that can be answered by looking at the painting.

Primary Standard: Interpretation and Evaluation

Use arts terminology to express ideas about Billboard, to identify characteristics of its style, and to discuss the artist's technique.

Interpret Billboard by responding to questions that help explore the artist's creative intent and the reasons behind her visual choices.

To complement study of the painting's commercial content, evaluate the persuasive techniques used in advertisements.

Discuss why Billboard can be considered a visual catalogue of New York City, read poems that use catalogues as a literary device, and write a poem based on a catalogue of words that express personal feelings about the local community. (See Activities, Language Arts.)

Correlate words selected from a poem by Frank O'Hara or another literary work to the part of Hartigan's painting that best describes or captures the essence of each word. (See Activities, Language Arts.)
