Middle Level: Grades 6-8

Middle-Level Standard: Nonfiction

Listen to presentations or read on-line information about the cultural context, function, and style of the unit's eight images and demonstrate comprehension of the material by responding to questions relating to description, interpretation, and association.

Middle-Level Standard: Fiction

Retell the fable of "The Fox and the Stork" based on the scenes shown on the porcelain teacups included in the unit.

To complement study of the fable illustrated on the teacups, read or listen to other fables featuring animals (e.g., Kipling's Just So Stories or Aesop's Fables). Identify the literary characteristics of fables.

Interpret the figurative language and imagery used in praise poems, an outgrowth of the West African oral tradition of praise songs and which complement study of the Benin Leopard sculpture. (See Amazing Animals Activities, Language Arts.)
