Curriculum Materials: Art in America
Bob Thompson During the 1960s, Bob Thompson's brightly colored
paintings earned him unprecedented success for a young black
painter. Thompson grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, where he
developed an enthusiasm for music, especially jazz. He also
began his career as an artist there and formed a group
called Gallery Enterprises, along with other black artists.
In 1959, Thompson moved to New York City's Lower Eastside,
where he became involved with a community of
AVANT-GARDE
musicians, visual artists, and poets.
