Effigy Bowl

This bird-shaped vessel, like others in the form of humans and animals, is called an effigy bowl. The sides were hand-built by pinching together successive coils or ropes of clay and smoothing them. Also formed from clay, the bird's neck and head extend from the bowl's side. The abstract head includes only a slightly pointed beak and large round eyes. Opposite the head, a semicircular projection of clay suggests tailfeathers and provides a small handle. The oval-shaped bowl itself becomes the bird's body. The artist has included only those details necessary to suggest the bird's form.
