Curriculum Materials: Art in America
Skyscrapers During the 1920s, skyscrapers became symbols of American
growth, embodying the energy, power, and wealth of expanding
cities. O'Keeffe's home, the Shelton
Hotel was just one of many skyscrapers built in a rapidly
transforming New York City during the early 20th century.
Like the distant building in City Night, many of these
skyscrapers were lit at night as a decorative and effective
way to advertise the companies that built them.
